Ways to adopt movies

This is not just a list...

The pandemic has made our lives even more monotonous than it was before. Since the first lockdown, I have consumed a lot of online content. Few days back I was watching “The Devil Wears Prada” again and I realised how much I want to resonate with the protagonist or sometimes even with the strong side character.

I watch movies where I can connect to the story or find some part of my life in it. Few of these stories stay with you for a long period of time. Evidently, “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” is one of those movies and is an absolute delight for many of us. Why do I think that? Well, I have a list. First, let aside all the latent characteristics of the movie, we all want a trip with friends. You may have travelled with your friends to some really cool places but are we ever satisfied with just a few? I know I have an uncountable number of trips to go on.  Second, the characters justify every road towards the future. If you are a topper, your hard work will pay off and you will do well for yourself. On the other hand, it does not matter if you were a backbencher, your hard work will pay off provided that you work hard. Bunny was a backbencher but he worked for his dream and achieved it. Last but not the least, “If that person was meant to be, the situations will turn out to be in your favour” (remember, "The Book of Twenties"). There are more aspects to the movie but let’s just stop here only.

This blog is not a review. Again, there is a list to ‘why this?’ Movies are a great part of my life. To connect with a character and watch a happy ending somewhere satisfies me that every story does have a happy ending (even “Conjuring” has a happy ending). These stories might be less than 3 hours but they create an environment where one can really relate.

Other than relatable content, movies can be an inspiration. Whenever I am feeling low or unworthy, I turn towards those movies which are a true inspiration. These inspirations may differ from person to person. For instance, just before writing this blog, I had a similar feeling. To calm myself down, I watched “Gunjan Sexena: The Kargil Girl”. The story puts us in a box where you have to struggle to reach your dreams, otherwise, others will crush them. It might contain few extra fictional scenes, but I cannot deny that it fuels my thoughts. Similarly, Vicky Kaushal said that “URI: The Surgical Strike” was made to inspire youth to join the defence and they passed with flying colours. I went to watch this movie with my friend, and I remember that we had a whole discussion over the armed forces on our way back.

There is one more aspect other than relatability and inspiration, it is entertainment. I believe movies are made for entertainment and they should be adopted with such spirit. Almost everyone asked me about my take on “Kabir Singh”. I have heard other’s takes as well. Since this generation is heavily influenced by pop culture, few found it too offensive to be shown such a rude and macho character. Few find the movie quite interesting and enjoyed it. Mostly, these two binaries can be noticed concerning this movie. My perspective is, "it is a movie and a one time watch". If our generation is that much influenced by movies, why aren’t they inspired by characters like Sunny from “Dil Dhadakne Do”. How could one forget the heated discussion between Manav and Sunny about how Manav let his wife work? The understanding that he is a feminist because he let his wife work didn’t sit well with Manav. It was such a relief when Sunny calls him out for being a pseudo-feminist.

Movies are a way out of our mundane lives to a fantasy. They are for entertainment and should be absorbed in that way only. Definitely, you are free to get inspired by whichever character you resonate with but remember it mirrors your personality as well. If it is ‘Kabir Singh’ for you, mind that he lost his career because of his personality. And if it is ‘Naina’ or ‘Bunny’, then your hard work and patience will get you both career and love. It is your choice to choose which side you want to be on.
